The exotic ingredients of Korean cosmetics and their purposes
Elisa Planchuelo and Juan Luis de Mateo, from the Cosmética Koreana team, detail the most interesting ingredients that are imported from South Korea to care for the skin of consumers
The rise of Korean cosmetics in the West is the result of a unique dedication to beauty in South Korea, where traditional ingredients are combined with avant-garde touches to captivate many people in Spain.
"Our main customers are women, but more and more men are looking beyond the supermarket shelves for facial care," explains Juan Luis de Mateo, co-founder of the Cosmética Koreana brand, who assures that "when customers try Korean cosmetics, they tend to repeat given the high perceived quality of the product".
"South Korea uses classic ingredients but also some very exotic ones," says Elisa Planchuelo, psychologist and also founder of Cosmética Koreana. "Although the West already knows ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, in Korea they work with unique local ingredients such as centella asiatica or ferment extracts."
Among the products that attract the most attention in the West are natural ingredients such as snail mucin, cocoa, and gotu kola, but Korean brands also regularly use acids such as salicylic acid and vitamins very specific as niacinamide.
Proper skin care
Although in South Korea it is common to perform a facial routine of between seven and ten steps, in Spain and other Western countries practicality is still used. "Time is usually very scarce in our day-to-day lives, which is why many people opt for 'express' solutions, encouraged by our fast-paced lifestyle," remarks Juan Luis. "Most customers tend to go for a quick two to four product routine."

To improve skin care, pay attention to the ingredients of the products on sale. "Most consumers know if a product is better or worse for health in a supermarket," explains Elisa, arguing that "due to ignorance, consumers let their guard down when it comes to facial care and may be buying ingredients with no greater use than that of reduce product cost to increase margins.
Ingredients for different purposes
While in South Korea cosmetics are used to enhance the skin, in Western countries makeup is used to hide flaws. "The remedy is worse than the disease" confesses Juan Luis, explaining that "if we use ingredients to camouflage our defects instead of to cure them, the small wounds and imperfections never heal."
Another example is sun creams, a star product during the summer in Spain that fades into the background with the cold. "It's rare that we stop using sun protection just because winter arrives. The sun continues to emit radiation throughout the year and is one of the most relevant factors in skin aging." explains Juan Luis. Koreans use sunscreen regularly. "The Korean routine contemplates sun protection daily when sun exposure is expected, the temperature does not matter," Elisa settles.
