Unanimously with 72 votes in favor, the Plenary Session of the Senate approved in general and in particular to prohibit the use of live animals in the production, research, manufacture and development of cosmetics.

When presenting the opinion on behalf of the Second Health and Legislative Studies commissions, by which various provisions of the General Health Law and the Federal Animal Health Law are reformed, the senator from Morena, Jesusa Rodríguez Ramírez, stated that The protection and integrity of the animals will be guaranteed.

He explained that in the midst of the global crisis we are experiencing, we must remember the importance of respecting the life of all living beings on the planet, "it is not difficult to realize that the vast majority of diseases that we suffer today , come from eating animal meat, from the mistreatment we give them and the situation in which the industry cruelly abuses them.

With this opinion, she said, we seek that tests are not carried out with animals for the use of cosmetics and ingredients that have been tested with these living beings for their preparation.

We believe that, even if it is a very small step, everything we advance in the issue of respect for animals is in our interest. "If we mistreat animals we will receive cruelty from nature," she stressed.

The comprehensive proposal of Senator from Morena, Ricardo Monreal, is based on the UNESCO Universal Declaration of Animal Rights, which establishes that no animal should be subjected to mistreatment or cruel acts, and that techniques should be used and developed alternatives to animal experimentation.

Senator Américo Villarreal Anaya, from Morena, said that with this reform a great step is taken to raise awareness about the cruelty with which animals are handled for aesthetic and vanity purposes. Now, harming living beings for these practices will be prohibited, he celebrated.

His teammate, Freyda Marybel Villegas Canché, commented that the cosmetic tests to which some animals are subjected are very painful and stressful. On many occasions they go blind, suffer from irritation, inflammation, convulsions and death, in addition, pain relievers are often not used, which causes severe pain, she added.

Also from Morena, Senator Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero, stated that genetic mutations have been generated in laboratories, which have turned against human beings. The coronavirus, he said, comes from cats and dogs, from small slaughtered species in the world.

He added that he experiments with his skin, with his eyes and in his bloodstream, impacting various organs and, he called for the equality of human beings and animals, for their right to live with dignity and be respected.

Senator Verónica Delgadillo García, from MC, stated that every year 115 million animals around the world are used to test cosmetic products. Beauty costs them their lives.

Therefore, she added, what is approved today is the dignity and life of animals. They are sentient beings that are not our property, so we have to rethink the relationship with ourselves and with nature, we have the ethical and moral responsibility to protect them.

The opinion that amends and adds various provisions of the General Health Law and the Federal Animal Health Law, to establish the prohibition of the use of animals in tests for cosmetic products, was sent to the Chamber of Deputies for the purposes of article 72 Constitutional.
