Amazon will stop using single -use plastic bags for shipments from January 1

Amazon will leave a single -use plastic bags in Spain from January 1 to pack the products that are sent from their own distribution network.

Instead, customers will receive their orders in flexible paper bags and cardboard envelopes, which are, according to the company, "easier to recycle" in the Spanish recycling domestic system, and which also contain more recycled material and allow to reduceThe volume of packages compared to corrugated cardboard boxes.

The new decision will affect both the articles sold by Amazon and those of commercial collaborators who use Amazon logistics services.

For larger orders, the company will continue to use cardboard boxes.In parallel, Amazon is expanding the selection of products that can be sent in the original packaging provided by the manufacturer, and to which you only have to add a label with the customer address, without the need for additional packaging.

"We have made changes in our supply network that allow us the single -use plastic packaging in Spain," said Amazon's country manager in Spain, Mariangela Marslia, who explained that customers have already begun to receive their orders inpaper bags and cardboard supports "easy to recycle".

"Our goal is to continue innovating so that our packaging is increasing.

The new measure adds to the different initiatives that the electronic commerce giant has launched to improve the sustainability of its shipments.In 2008, the company launched the 'Abrafácil' program, which offers customers easy to open and 100% recyclable.Since then, the program has evolved and growing, and currently includes initiatives designed to optimize the packaging that the company uses in its logistics centers.

The electronic commerce giant explained that thanks to this program, since 2015 it has reduced the weight of the packaging by 36% on average per shipment and has eliminated a million tons of packaging material, which would be equivalent to about 2.000 million packages.

Likewise, Amazon is on its way to reaching 100% renewable energy in all its operations by 2025 and has commissioned more than 100.000 electric cast vehicles.To date, Amazon has already delivered more than 20 million packages to its customers in electric vehicles in North America and Europe.
