Competition Defense applied fines to six supermarket chains for charging plastic bags before it was mandatory
In March 2019, the Association of Supermarkets of Uruguay (ASU), together with the unions that bring together retail and self-service stores (Cambadu) and service stations (Unvenu), announced that they had agreed to start to charge four pesos for plastic bags starting in April. It was a decision prior to the entry into force of an environmental law, which began on July 1, 2019, which forced the sale of biodegradable bags —less polluting— and charging four pesos for them, as a way of discouraging their use.
