Letizia triumphs with a spectacular dress by her mother-in-law Doña Sofía

As is tradition, in mid-January the reception for the Accredited Diplomatic Corps in Spain is held, presided over by the King and Queen at the Royal Palace. Despite the fact that it is a morning act, its protocol makes attendees dress up, so, after Military Easter, this becomes the second event of the year in which we see Doña Letizia long. Lorenzo Caprile and Felipe Varela have been, since 2005, the signatures that have been repeated the most on this occasion, and they have normally advocated very elegant designs, in neutral tones that evoke that extra sobriety but without being excessive for a daytime event. This 2022 has remained faithful to its characteristic sophistication but has wanted to innovate by betting on an unexpected, fresh and original outfit that belongs to his mother-in-law.
an unexpected choice
As we said, normally in this act he has worn outfits in which neutral and dark tones such as navy blue, black or burgundy predominated. However, this time he wanted to break his own rules and has chosen a very cheerful spring look. It has a light bodice with a rounded neck, semi-transparent puffed sleeves and tight cuffs made of a pearl gray chiffon fabric decorated with floral embroidery in shades of pink and green, the latter color also staining the unexpected long skirt. Instead of going for a straight or flared piece, he has opted for a modern high-waisted garment that sits at the waist and creates volume from the hips through strategic ruching.

New tribute to his mother-in-law
As soon as we have seen this election, it was clear that it did not follow the example of the previous ones and was very different from the usual gala looks of Doña Letizia. Therefore, it was natural that the question arose: where had she acquired it? The answer is simple: she has lent it to him (or a gift) from her mother-in-law, Doña Sofía. There are several times in which the current Queen has wanted to pay tribute to her husband's mother through fashion, the last one last September. Of course, she has again slightly modified some points to make the look more current and adapt it to her personal style, starting by wearing the belt with the loop backwards instead of forwards. The Queen Emeritus donned this look from Valentino Garavani's Haute Couture collection on several occasions, one of them meeting then-German President Walter Scheel during an official trip to the country in 1977.

As expected, since she has done so in her latest gala looks, the Queen has decided to pick up her hair, opting for a medium ponytail with a middle parting that cleared her face. She has opted for a somewhat more marked makeup than usual but totally appropriate for the occasion. As for accessories, she has opted for classic pumps and has dispensed with a bag. She did wear her inseparable gold ring from Karen Hallam and dangling ruby and emerald earrings from Tous that lit up her face.
