Social awareness regarding the environment is increasing more and more and sustainability has been gaining ground in consumer preferences. For this reason, companies are choosing to adapt their strategies and focus them on combating climate change, being more respectful of the environment and promoting more sustainable consumption habits.
This commitment includes recognized brands such as Lay's, Doritos and Cheetos
In this context, PepsiCo, which in Spain already has 100% recycled plastic bottles in its entire Pepsi range, has made public its intention to eliminate virgin plastic of fossil origin in all its bags of potato chips and chips to the year 2030. In this way, it undertakes to use 100% recycled or renewable plastic, which will allow, according to calculations, a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of up to 40% per ton of packaged material, by using recycled or renewable source material.
This project, located within the framework of the "PepsiCo Positive" plan, aims to achieve a circular economy of flexible packaging by working on the design and infrastructure that can give packaging a new life. Narcís Roura, Managing Director of PepsiCo in South-West Europe states: “We see a future with our bags free of virgin plastic and being part of a prosperous circular economy in which flexible packaging is valued and recycled like new packaging.” .

One of the strategic pillars that PepsiCo is going to focus on to develop this idea is design. The new packaging contains a higher proportion of recyclable plastics, such as polypropylene, commonly called "monomaterials" This means that they comply with the design guidelines for recycling developed by CEFLEX, the collaborative initiative promoted by European companies representative of the entire flexible packaging value chain.
The first pilot test in Europe will start this year in France with a range of Lay's that includes renewable plastic
On the other hand, PepsiCo is also directing its initiatives to reduce unnecessary packaging both in its individual bags and in multipacks, as part of its commitment to reduce the use of virgin plastic by 50% by the end of this decade. In Spain, for example, the plastic seal of the multipack has been replaced by a paper one.
Although the company itself maintains that using flexible plastic has a low carbon footprint, they add: "A change is necessary to reduce the volume of virgin plastic of fossil origin that is used and promote circularity in flexible packaging."
Development of greater sustainability
The company also focuses its energies on getting more flexible plastics to be recycled and reused in Europe, for which they have developed their own program called "Making Bags Better". With this type of commitment they also want to be part of the collaboration and financing of the development of efficient waste collection systems in Europe. In Spain, PepsiCo also carries out different actions to promote sustainability through organizations such as Ecoembes, SEO Bird Life or Paisaje Limpio.
Gerald Rebit, Director of Sustainability at AMCOR, a packaging company and PepsiCo Partner in Europe, stated: “We are building a future so that flexible packaging is part of a circular economy. We have improved the material technologies of the new bags to make them easier to recycle.” Furthermore, it encourages more partners to invest in the supply chains of these new materials.
As part of the company's initiatives, they are already promoting the conversion of containers into plastic pellets and with this they are managing to remake them into articles such as urban furniture and parts for the automobile industry.
Investment for the environment
The multinational is investing in creating the necessary capacity to carry out this initiative and so that packaging never becomes waste. To do this, PepsiCo is also investing in technology to create infrastructure that improves recycling, in such a way that smart packaging has already begun to be tested in several brands in 2022 in markets such as Germany and France. PepsiCo is working with partners from the recycling industry, such as Borealis and TOMRA, to advance advanced flexible packaging recycling technologies.
In line with the opinion of Archana Jagannathan, PepsiCo Europe's Senior Director of Sustainable Packaging, from PepsiCo they underline the importance of having greater clarity in policies and technologies for recycled and renewable materials, and add: "If they accelerate for packaging policies and waste infrastructure similar to that of beverage bottle packaging, we will accelerate our plans and go even faster to meet our commitments.”
