Bloomberg Línea — The stock markets in the United States ran five sessions with losses, after the minutes of the Federal Reserve confirmed the bearish tone of the main stock market indicators of that country. The S&P 500 (SPX) marked its worst start to the year since 2016, while the Nasdaq Composite (CCMPDL) closed again in the red, as technology stocks they keep falling.

The Dow Jones Industrial had a slight drop of -0.01%. “2022 has not seen its usual early-year recovery,” Florian Ielpo, head of macro at Lombard Odier Asset Management, told Bloomberg. “The first week of January is usually a week of positive stock performance: this time, they fell and the stock took it all.”

Added to the central bank minutes were comments from St. Louis Fed President James Bullard, who said that interest rates could begin to rise as early as March, while San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly added on Friday that she favored raising benchmark rates “gradually”.

The Fed's stance does not exclusively affect stocks, as cryptocurrencies have also fallen after the central bank's change of tone. Bitcoin (XBT) was trading at US$41,983.91 at 4:18 p.m. in New York, with a weekly loss of 11%.

In Latin America, the Chilean stock market (IPSA) was the only one that registered losses, after the Ipsa fell -1.20%. The inflation data, higher than expected, suggests a tightening by the central bank's monetary policy, after prices closed last year with a rise of 7.2%, the highest since 2007.

The Brazilian stock market (IBOV) was the one that had the best performance among its peers and the Ibovespa rose 1.14%. Companies in the materials and financial sectors were among the best performers on the day.
