Buddhism was introduced into Korea from China around the fourth century, but its golden age came from the seventh century, during the late period of the chair dynasty (57 A.C-935) and especially with the Grayo Dynasty (918-1392), when it became a state religion.From the establishment of the Joseon dynasty in the fourteenth century, Buddhism initiated a slow decline due to the neoconfucian ideas of the new rulers, who strongly repressed the Buddhist manifestations throughout the following six centuries.

Today, half of the South Korean population declares themselves not believer, and most of the rest professes Christianity.Buddhism lived a rebirth in the second half of the twentieth century and is currently like the second religion, with 20% of faithful.

Judging by the large number of Buddhist temples that the country treasures, it would be said that the faith of Buddha has not lost its primacy as a spiritual guide of the Koreans.Some of the most outstanding sacred enclosures are located in remote places, such as Haeinsa, one of the most important of Korea and next stage of my trip.

Haeinsa's great Buddhist complex stands in the middle of Gayasan National Park - it is accessed by bus from the city of Daegu - and its elegant pavilions seem to mimicize with the surrounding nature.On the back of the enclosure is the Jangyeong Panjeon, a 15th -century wooden building that preserves the Korean Tripitaka, the most important Buddhist text collection in the world, recorded in 81.340 wooden blocks dating from the thirteenth century.Thanks to the ingenious building design, which maintains the ideal ventilation, moisture and temperature, the wood blocks have preserved untouched to this day.
