The work behind the impressive looks you will see in ‘Cruella’ work behind the impressive looks you will see in ‘Cruella’
Este 28 de mayo se estrenó en cines y Disney Plus con Premiere Acces ‘Cruella’, el nuevo live action de Disney que pinta para convertirse en uno de los favoritos. Not only for the tremendous performances of Emma Stone and Emma Thompson as the protagonist and antagonists, but also for the marked style and love for fashion that can be seen in the film, because as we all know, Cruella de Vil is a true fashionista iconist.
We had the opportunity to be at conference with Jenny Beavan (costume designer) winner of two Oscar awards for her work in Mad Max: fury on the road and a love in Florence;Nadia Stacey (hairstyle and makeup) and Fiona Crombie (production design).A team of super talented women who gave Cruella a distinctive and memorable seal.
THE MOVEMENT OF THE 70
The tape is located in the London of the 70s.To better understand where this aesthetic that we can see in the movie comes, it is important to mention that at that time the first wave of punk was carried out.
A period in which rock had ceased to be close to people, and in a search to bring back their essence to represent and be a means of expression of the identity of young people, new music groups began to emerge thatThey sought to move away from stereotypes and the socially established, to make fun of the rigidity of conventionalism that prevented free social and cultural expression.
A release movement from music and fashion, which was directly related to the bands that imposed trends and a new aesthetic pattern from the stage. At this time full of rebellion, creativity, identity search and itinerant behaviors, Cruella, a fashion -loving woman since childhood, who gets out of the box and represents a revolution in clothing design.
Upon knowing the context, the extravagant outfits begin to make greater sense and encompass a much deeper meaning, as with the hairstyle and makeup, very ad hoc with the time and with the movement.
The designs
Jenny Beavan was in charge of designing the clothing for the film, next to a team of professionals who did an excellent job, among which designers Sarah Young, Sheara Abrahams and Sally Turner, a team in charge of getting all fabrics andMaterials, a section of tailors, and five cutters that shape the designs approved by Jenny.
According to the designer herself, 'Cruella' has been the biggest project he has worked on, because to give you an idea, cruella/Estella had 47 different looks, to which those of the baroness are added, those ofHoracio and Gaspar, and those of all the extras that we can see in several sequences.
Jenny told us that for her it was very fun to make the wardrobe of ‘Cruella’, because she lived that time and dressed that fashion.
"The best moment, that first day outside Liberty’s, oh my God! When I saw people it was like" Oh, I had one of those! "You know, that's how we saw each other. That was fun."
And he added that despite being a challenge to build so many outfits, it was very rewarding to be able to tell this story through clothes, because more than designer, Jenny considers herself a storyteller, and in this case, she explains that from thescript was very clear the path they wanted to take with the outfits.
"I was actually very clear in the script. There is a true dramatic arc in it.And hopefully we have managed to capture that arc in its transformation, from a girl who is obviously anarchist, rebel and does interventions in her school uniform.Sarah's younger sister, my incredible associated designer, was a type of inspiration for that, because she used to use her backward bag and things like that."
The secret is in the details
On the other hand, Nadia Stacey and Fiona Crombie also think the same, because Nadia had to work in an impressive amount of different wigs and makeups for each sequence, which are located in different locations that Fiona had to decorate paying attention even in the mostMinimum detail.
"The greatest challenge was definitely the number of sets we had.The film has a great rhythm and we move a lot around so we were very busy. There were 120 sets pending to do throughout a shot. Some of them were huge and other tiny, such as small rooms. But I think that one of the things I feel most proud of in the film is the level of detail in each of the sets." nos platicó Fiona.
For the eighteenth century dance, 152 wigs were designed, in addition to theme dress for 107 guests to the event and a special collection for the parade that interrupts Estella by accident.
For the Viking dance, another 88 wigs and their respective changing rooms were designed; And for the black and white party, in addition to the designs that the protagonists look, special clothing for 90 guests was also created.
“I think the greatest thing for me is that makeup and hairstyle in this movie, something that had never happened to me in another tape, is used as a deception tool. You know, she has to distinguish himself from the baroness. When we first see Estella, it must be credible that she is a girl who is growing in that period of time in London. And then she is creating this personality of Cruella." nos contó Nadia.
“When Estella begins to appear on the red carpets like Cruella, there is a kind of mask and a specific quality in the different makeups he uses, because he has to excel.I needed the difference to be huge between both looks.I needed to keep Estella a little simple to have that great place of possibilities to go for Cruella.I really enjoyed the moment because I felt that I would never do something similar again.I will never have that huge amount of looks to do." finalizó.
Emma Stone's favorites
To this are added the special costumes for the red carpet events in which Cruella eclipse to the baroness, including the shocking bright black leather monkey with shoulder pads of bearing bands.
It also highlights the dress that wraps the car of the baroness, which has a skirt made of 5060 organza petals, individually sewn by a seamstress team.
“This dress should be heavy enough to make Emma turn with him, but at the same time light enough so he could descend from the car and move. Fue un desafío" explicó Jenny.
But the dress that most impressed Emma Stone and became her favorite, was the one with which Cruella leaves the garbage truck.A dress made with the collection of dresses of the Baroness of 1967, cooked to create a shocking tail of twelve meters with which Cruella conques the city.
“My favorite, favorite outfit was the dress that I wear in the garbage truck, because I had a tail about 40 feet. That was not attached to the dress, because obviously I could not make it move.It was phenomenal, I mean, nothing that is remotely capable of using in real life.Although to be honest, I also liked the skirt with which I cover the car." confesó Emma Stone.
And he added that “those are the moments when you really realize that you are making a movie, because in your life they would never happen."
Baroness attire obviously do not fall behind, and although they are more conservative compared to Cruella, they also manage to excel. To be able to do them, Jenny Beavase was inspired by the cinema muses, from Joan Crawford to Elizabeth Taylor.
“I think that when Cruella arrives with the baroness, who is a little old-fashioned but an incredible designer, learns a lot and perfects her skills."
For her part, actress Emma Thompson told us about how in love she was left with each and every one of the outfits she wore, something that prevented her from choosing what her favorite was.Although not everything was easy with them.
“Urinal was difficult, and involved a whole team of people. The shoes were also a challenge, because in real life I do not use anything higher than some flip flops. And I also used wig, so it was really higher than I am really.I had to enter and get out of side places and with three dalmatians at my feet. The underwear was a challenge, not for Stone because she is thin as a lily, does not need a corset like a whale hahaha."
Both Emma Thompson and Emma Stone agreed that the costumes of ‘Cruella’ helped them a lot to enter the character, and enjoyed it, because on no other occasion they would have a chance to wear something so incredible.
